Creation of the department: The department of Guatemala, unique in the metropolitan region, was created by decree of the Constitutional Assembly of the Government of Guatemala on November 4 th . 1825.

1) Guatemala City : The city of Guatemala, the country's capital, offers several attractions that include visits to the historic center of the city where you can see constructions that combine the neoclassical and baroque styles, up to the eclecticism and modernism; also, you can take tours to churches and museums. 2) Map made in Relief : This interesting destination must be visited when touring around the city. It was inaugurated 100 years ago (October 29 th ., 1905) by the then President Manuel Estrada Cabrera, the Map made in Relief allows the visitors to know the topographic features of the Republic of Guatemala in a wide and pleasant environment. 3) Main Plaza or Plaza de la Constitución: The historic center of the capital city inherited the Spanish town tradition that has a checkered layout just as the one in Antigua Guatemala. The Main Plaza of the capital city is the center (in a figurative sense) of the city. To the north is the National Palace of Culture, to the south the Portal del Comercio, to the east the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Archbishop Palace, and the San José de los Infantes School, and finally to the west, the Centenary Park with its "Concha Acústica" (a type of outdoor theatre where they use to have concerts, etc.).
4) Central Market: Located on the back side of the Metropolitan Cathedral, this market is divided into several sections: 1) Gastronomy Section where you can taste regional typical dishes. 2) Fruits and Vegetables Section. 3) Typical clothing and saddle Section. 4) Handcrafts Section, where you can purchase a great variety of handcrafts such as pottery, carpentry, tinware, textiles, copper, toys, candles, masks, pyrogravures, etc.
5) Civic Center: The group of buildings, plazas, and perrons conformed by the Municipal Palace, the Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social, the Credito Hipotecario Nacional, the Bank of Guatemala, the Supreme Court of Justice, and the Court Tower is, without a doubt, one of the areas with more activity and importance in the capital city.
